This revered cultivar traces its origins to Anxi, China, where legend says a humble farmer devoted his life to tending the temple of Tie Guan Yin — the Iron Goddess of Mercy. Moved by his hard work and dedication, the goddess led him to a hidden cave, where he found a single tea plant to bring prosperity to him and his village.
In the 1920s, the cultivar arrived in Taiwan, finding a new home in hilly Muzha, Taipei. In contrast to traditional Chinese methods, Taiwanese producers apply their charcoal-roasting expertise to develop a deep, bold, and hearty flavor. The result is a distinctive tea that embodies the strength and spirit of its origins.
